Moderne Ventures Announces Investment in ICON

Moderne Ventures recently announced its investment in ICON, a construction technologies company using 3D printing robotics, software and advanced materials solving a plurality of problems in the contemporary building industry. Moderne Ventures completes ICON’s $9M seed round which was led by Oakhouse Partners and included other venture firms such as D.R. Horton, the largest homebuilder by volume in the U.S. since 2002; Emaar, the largest developer in the Middle East and creator of the tallest building in the world and Vulcan Capital, the investment arm of the late Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, Paul Allen.

“Through ICON’s breakthrough technology, we will see homes being 3D printed in less than 24 hours for fractions of the cost of traditional homebuilding,” said Moderne’s Founder and Managing Partner, Constance Freedman. “When pairing their technology with digital transactions and augmented reality, ordering, creating, building, transacting and moving into a brand new home in less than five days from start to finish becomes plausible—truly a disruptive technology that can transform the industry. We’re looking forward to supporting them as they transform the homebuilding market.”

“It’s our mission at ICON to re-imagine the approach to homebuilding and construction and make affordable, dignified housing available to everyone throughout the world,” said Jason Ballard, Co-founder and CEO of ICON. “We’re thrilled to have the support from Moderne and look forward to working together.”

ICON’s first commercial partner, NewStory, is also a Moderne Ventures portfolio company. NewStory is using ICON’s technology to transform global homelessness and turn slums into communities.
